Awards



The EMI counts among its assets its major responsibility for seven very prestigious medals.These medals are named after world-class outstanding mechanicians. Each of these medals is held in very high regard in the mechanics community. The von Karman Medal, in particular, is largely considered as one of the highest honors in Engineering Mechanics in all disciplines.

The EMI medals are administered by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Awards Committee

Purpose: To advise the Board of Governors on general matters of concern within the Institute (in particular on selection of new Board of Governors members and on establishment, merger, or redirection of technical and task committees); and to serve as the Engineering Mechanics Institute awards committee, with full authority to make the Institute's recommendations or nominations for all relevant Society awards.

TWO INSTITUTE MEMBERS ELECTED TO DISTINGUISHED MEMBERSHIP

The American Society of Civil Engineers recently recognized the accomplishments of two Engineering Mechanics Institute members by electing them Distinguished Members, Class of 2010.   

Ahsan Kareem, Ph.D., Dist.M.ASCE, NAE and Stein Sture, Ph.D., Dist.M.ASCE will be formally inducted at the Celebration  of Leaders Luncheon on October 21, 2010 in Las Vegas, during the 140th Annual Civil Engineering Conference.

 

EMI 2010 AWARD RECIPIENTS

The 2010 EMI award recipients are: Robert W. Zimmerman, Ph.D. (Maurice A. Biot Medal), Arvid Naess, Ph.D., M.ASCE  (Alfred M. Freudenthal Medal), Frank L. DiMaggio, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE (Raymond D. Mindlin Medal),                                  Howard S. Levine, Ph.D., M.ASCE (Nathan M. Newmark Medal), Hai-Fan Xiang, Ph.D. (Robert H. Scanlan Medal),                Jan Achenbach, Ph.D. (Theodore von Karman Medal). 

Recipients will be presented with the awards at the prestigious Awards ceremony which will take place at the 2010 EMI Conference, August 8-11, Los Angeles, California.
