Welcome to EMI

President's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to keep you updated on the newly created Engineering Mechanics Institute, EMI, which replaces the former ASCE Engineering Mechanics Division.

The mission of the Institute is to serve the engineering community through the development and application of engineering mechanics by anticipating and adapting to new challenges that will face tomorrow's engineers and by creating an environment that facilitates professional growth to ensure that these future challenges will be met.  The Institute seeks to establish a presence at the forefront of new thrusts of mechanics by promoting the most innovative developments in the field, regardless of the discipline of the ultimate user.  The Institute also seeks to provide a home not only for those involved in the traditional disciplines, but also for those involved with emerging areas of mechanics. Additionally, the Institute seeks to promote the interdependence of engineering mechanics and other disciplines by providing an interdisciplinary forum for researchers, practicing engineers, industry representatives, citizen groups, public officials and others.

The vision for EMI is to be a premier organization representing engineering mechanics by effectively serving the needs of the world-wide engineering mechanics community and promoting both research and application of scientific and mathematical principles to address a broad spectrum of existing and emerging engineering and societal problems.

At its July meeting, the ASCE Board of Direction approved the formation of EMI effective October 1, 2007. The current members of the Board of Governors of EMI are:
Wilfred D. Iwan, Ph.D., M.ASCE, President Alexander H.D. Cheng, Ph.D., M.ASCE, Vice President James L. Beck, Ph.D., M.ASCE Roger G. Ghanem, Ph.D., M.ASCE Stein Sture, Ph.D., F.ASCE, ASCE Representative George Z. Voyiadjis, Ph.D., M.ASCE, Treasurer.
One seat on the Board of Governors is currently open.

Amar A. Chaker, Ph.D., M.ASCE, is the Director of EMI and, following the bylaws of EMI, will serve as Secretary of the EMI Board.  He will be assisted by Verna Jameson, Administrator.

An important decision of the EMI Board at its inaugural meeting on October 19 was to carry over the EMD committee structure to EMI. The Board will meet during the Inaugural International Engineering Mechanics Conference at the University of Minnesota in May to approve a strategy for future committee membership and activities.

EMI will continue to conduct all the activities of the former Engineering Mechanics Division, but as an Institute, it will have greater freedom in launching new initiatives, forging partnerships with other organizations, and more generally, in running its own affairs under the direction of its Board of Governors.  However, EMI needs to take on new tasks in order to become a viable Institute, including: increasing its membership; creating and maintaining an informative web site; publishing an e-newsletter; and initiating new revenue-generating products and services.  One of the first tasks for EMI has been to inform potential members of its existence and to reach out to other engineering mechanics-related organizations.

Members of ASCE can select EMI as their free Institute when they renew their membership.  If they are already members of another ASCE Institute, they can either change their free membership to EMI or become a member of two different Institutes for $20 in addition to their regular ASCE membership dues. One can also join EMI as an EMI-only member.  Regular EMI-only membership is $80, and graduate student membership is $25.  Members from countries receiving a discount for ASCE membership (http://www.asce.org/membership/intlmemdues.cfm) receive a similar discount for EMI membership.

Individuals who join by December 31, 2008 will become Charter Members of EMI.  In addition, non-ASCE members who join the Institute by this date will have their annual membership dues for 2008 cover both 2008 and 2009, a 50% savings.

EMI members will receive our newsletter, EMI News.  They may attend EMI programs and symposia at a discounted member rate, purchase EMI publications and subscribe to the Journal of Engineering Mechanics at member-only prices, and they will be eligible to join EMI Technical Committees.  A new web site and an electronic newsletter are under development, and will be available in the near future.

I encourage you to invite your colleagues to join EMI, whether they are members of ASCE or not,  and partner with us in building the future of engineering mechanics.

Thank you for all you have given to the support of the Engineering Mechanics Division and for your commitment to the new Engineering Mechanics Institute.  I look forward to working with you in this new venture.

Sincerely,
Wilfred D. Iwan, Ph.D.
President
